The learning begins!

Hello! I'm Ashley and my major is Pre-Clincal. I am setting my goals high to become an occupational therapist! Helping others and making a difference in people's lives has always been a passion of mine. So, I now hope to learn more about HIV not only to educate myself, but others around me.
I'm not sure about everyone, but I know when I think about HIV, it is quite frightening. When I think about HIV, I automatically assume "death". But, I know that is not always the case for people. I know I have a bad habit of judging people, when I hear about someone having aids. From the news, and what we have been taught in school, I just assume prostitue or crack-head. I know these assumptions might anger others, but I don't have a mass amount of knowledge on the HIV subject. So, I do hope to learn more about this virus.
The thing about aids that interests me, well actually confuses me,is the fact that there is no cure. Scientists have discovered countless cures for a variety of diseases and sicknesses, but never HIV. It just baffles me that, we know what HIV is and what causes it, but still no cure? I wonder if there ever will be a cure? I also, wonder why some people can live with HIV for several years, and why some people die within a year of finding out?
Hopefully , I will learn some answers to my questions very soon!

Bye for now,
Ashley

  1. Ashley, your blog will be easier to read if you put spaces between your paragraphs. AIDS is always capitalized. Are you going to use a cure for HIV as your interest for the semester? You will have an interesting road ahead of you. You might start with the common cold as it too is a virus and we haven't been able to cure it.

You will find that most people have lived more than a year with HIV. They may have been diagnosed with the virus and it seemed that they died quickly, but in actual fact they were probably living with the virus for 5-10 years before diagnosis. That is what we found out was happening to those in the early 80s who seemed to get the diagnosis and died quickly. They were infected back in the late 60s and 70s, but the signs and symptoms didn't show up for 10 years.

Good luck with your research. I look forward to reading your Did You Know tidbits.

  2. One thing that you will learn is that this is a very individualized disease. People react differently to the virus as well as the medications.

I believe that I was infected in the late 70s, due to the things I was doing at the time. I tested positive in 1985 shortly after the test became available. My late partner Dennis was getting strange infections and the doctor couldn’t figure out why they would return after he finished a course of antibiotics. The doctor finally tested Dennis for HIV (HTLV-3) back in 1985, and Dennis was positive, so naturally he wanted to test me, and it was no surprise that I was positive too.

Three months later Dennis was in the hospital with PCP and an AIDS diagnosis. He died in September of 1988. I on the other hand remained “healthy” and showed no signs of disease whatsoever. I didn’t start any kind of medication until 1994, nine years after learning that I was positive, and I am well into my 3rd decade at least with HIV and have not digressed to an AIDS diagnosis.

I still see HIV/AIDS as a terminal illness, just that it now takes longer, and many of us die from the side effects from the medications.

As Teach said, both the common cold and HIV are retroviruses, which means that they constantly mutate, which is the reason it is so difficult to find a “cure.” Some believe that there will never be a cure, and that some day HIV will mutate itself into something that is benign in the human body.
